ROLE: Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
REPORTS TO: Medical Director
REMUNERATION: Per approved remuneration structure. Further details of this as well as the other terms of employment will be discussed at the interview.
LOCATION: Westland-Haasto

 

JOB PURPOSE:

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer will use equipment that produces two-dimensional high frequency sound waves to create diagnostic images of the human body for use in diagnosis of disease or organ malfunctions.

The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer will also work with physicians by reading sonographs and making diagnostic judgments based on test results.

 

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Setting up and maintaining ultrasound equipment.
  • Performing ultrasound examinations on patients and presenting the sonograms and preliminary findings to the Physician or Specialist.
  • Producing images resulting from the ultrasound examinations.
  • Interpreting ultrasound images to aid patient diagnosis.
  • Carrying out training on ultrasound equipment for other healthcare professionals.
  • Addressing patients’ concerns before, during and after ultrasound examinations.
  • Keeping up to date records of scans performed and images produced.
  • Referring patients to other healthcare professionals and facilities, when necessary
  • Soothing and reassuring nervous or anxious patients
  • Selecting and examining images, looking for differences between healthy and pathological areas, and determining if the scope of the exam should be extended, based on preliminary findings.
  • Completing the appropriate documentation and maintaining patients’ histories and medical records.
  • Prepare ultrasound equipment and exam room ensuring proper sterilization and safety procedures are followed.
  • Review the patient’s medical chart prior to their appointment and have a clear understanding of the images required.
  • Use positioning tools and safety equipment properly to ensure patient safety and comfort throughout the imaging.
  • Attend continuing education courses and work to advance personal knowledge and experience within the field.
  • Use ethical judgment and critical thinking skills to perform diagnostic imaging safely.
  • Review images before sending to the physician to ensure a clear image of the area requested.

SKILLS

  • In-depth understanding of the principles of medicine and healthcare.
  • Knowledge of human physiology and anatomy
  • Working knowledge of ultrasound equipment and ability to explain technical terms in clear terms.
  • Excellent bedside manner
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent physical stamina and the ability to stand for long hours
  • Tact and discretion
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail
  • Proficiency with computer software commonly used for documentation and sonographic report presentation.
  • Strong analytical, judgment and decision-making skill.
  • Good human/ interpersonal relation skills

EDUCATIONAL AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • A 1st Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography from any accredited recognized University.
  • Must be registered with the Allied Health Professional Council and be in good standing.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years professional experience working in an Accredited medical facility.
  • Knowledgeable in the policies and standards applicable in radiological/Radiographic services
  • Experience working with sensitive and personal patient records and information.
